J. D. (Dave) Webb resides in Illinois with his wife of over 40 years and their toy poodle, Ginger, losing all family votes 2 to 1. Dave officially became an author in 2002 after spending 25 years in corporate management. A company purge promoted him to cobbler and he owned a shoe repair and sales shop for 11 years. During these careers he wrote short stories, suppressing an urge to write a novel. After making a conscious decision to become a full-time author and live at the poverty level, those novels began forcing their way out. Shepherd's Pie (Golden Wings Award) and Moon Over Chicago (Eppie finalist) were published in 2006, and Her Name is Mommy was published in 2007. His new book, Smudge, is due out in July 2010. Despite the success of his novels, Dave still has a strong passion for short stories.

Rex Stout's first big book, Fer-de-Lance. That book, J.D. says, put the seed into his head to be a mystery writer.

I have planned to reread the book that got me hooked on mysteries – Rex Stout’s Fer-De-Lance.
Has a review of your work ever changed your own perception of your work?
Yes. One reviewer stated that I was the Mickey Spillane of the Midwest. I had never considered my writing anything like that of Spillane.
What was your first published work, and what did you do to celebrate it?
Shepherd’s Pie and I did the manly thing- I cried.
As a fellow Sniplits author, I wonder if you prefer writing short stories to other forms of writing? Always interested in the opinion of a published writer. Thanks, Tom Anselm
Thanks, Tom. A great question. I began writing short stories and branched out to write novels. I consider each of the chapters in my books to be a short story. A beginning, a middle and ending. Hopefully that ending will force the reader to turn the page. So the answer is, I don't prefer one over another. To me, each word whether in a novel, short story or essay must be chosen carefully. That word must further the plot. Sounds simple but so hard to do.
Ask J.D. a Question
When he runs low on gas, Dave Christian takes the exit to Valhalla, only to discover that getting out of town won't be so easy.
